Steps for sending packages to Europe

Steps for sending packages to Europe

Sending packages from the United States to Europe doesn't have to be complicated. Whether you're shipping a single box of gifts to family in Romania or moving an entire household to Germany, the process follows the same basic steps. In this guide, we'll walk you through everything you need to know.

1. Choose the right boxes

Start by sorting your items and choosing appropriate packaging. For fragile items like glassware, ceramics, and electronics, plastic boxes provide the best protection. For clothing, books, and other non-fragile items, sturdy cardboard boxes work great.

Avoid reusing weak or damaged boxes — your shipment may travel thousands of miles, so good packaging is critical.

2. Pack with cushioning

Once items are in the box, fill any empty spaces with air cushion film, bubble wrap, packing paper, or even soft clothing items. The goal is to prevent things from shifting during transit. A box that's tightly packed (without being overstuffed) survives long journeys much better than a half-empty one.

3. Seal it properly

Use quality packing tape and seal the top and bottom of the box with at least three strips on each side. For sea shipments (which take 4–7 weeks), wrapping the entire box with stretch film adds water resistance and prevents accidental opening.

4. Mind the weight limits

For air shipping, the minimum chargeable weight is 10 lbs per package. For sea, it's 20 lbs. There's no maximum for most countries, but heavier boxes are typically more cost-effective per pound.

5. Label clearly

Write or print clear labels with sender info (your name, US address, phone), recipient info (full name, address, postal code, phone), and a brief description of contents like "Personal effects — clothing and gifts."

6. Drop off at our Chicago location

Bring your packages to 3354 W Bryn Mawr Ave, Chicago, IL 60659. We're open Monday through Thursday from 5 PM to 8 PM, and Saturday from 11 AM to 2 PM. No appointment needed.

7. Pay

At drop-off we accept cash, check, or card. If you prefer to pay later, you can also use our payment page with Square or PayPal.

8. Track and wait

You'll get a tracking number for every shipment. Air packages arrive in 7–20 days, sea shipments in 4–7 weeks. Your recipient will be contacted before delivery to coordinate timing.
